My Thoughts-Title: 'Seagulls Seashore' Mixed Media: Sold. Acrylic painting on canvas depicting Seagulls and the Seashore, St Kilda with its empty houses and shoreline on one corner with observatory/research on the other. Much of this painting is inspired by reading and looking ....St Kilda and its past life is fascinating, how this little Island was governed by Elders making joint decisions( all men!?) was self sustaining and environmentally friendly could teach us a thing or too about nature's balance and sustainability.
Inspiration: I began this painting after a long day of housework/cleaning, towards the end of the afternoon I went out to the garden to see the sky, I spotted a seagull very high up, the underside only visible, the idea of flight and freedom was intoxicating against the blue sky pepped with white clouds. I began the drawing straight away from memory only, of seagulls, freedom, emotion and St Kilda. The idea of the Island now belonging to the Gulls developed as I have read articles of St Kilda and its people. The text is taken from random sources but generally Natural Heritage information booklets aimed at tourists/RSPB it's work and aims which I like to underline by inclusion. As well as fishing and growing in seaweed the Little Puffins were a staple diet....which was sustainable and balanced.... yearly rather than depleted....but of course the Puffins and the Gulls have the Freedom of the Island now without Islanders just research and day-trippers to visit Their 'Seagulls Seashore'! www.kilda.org.uk/frame1.htm
